LifeStraw brand story
1999 - LifeStraw's story begins with Vestergaard (LifeStraw's parent company) creating a plastic pipe filter to filter out dracunculus larvae (and prevent dracunculus disease) for the Carter Center. Hookworm disease, also known as dracunculiasis, is an infection caused by the parasite Dracunculus medinensis. DFD is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) that is transmitted to humans primarily through the consumption of unfiltered drinking water from ponds or other standing surface water sources.
2005 - The first portable personal water filter, the LifeStraw®, is introduced for humanitarian purposes. The water filter is an evolution of the HDF filter and transforms dirty water into safe drinking water by removing bacteria and parasites from drinking water.
2009 - Vestergaard (LifeStraw's parent company) builds and funds the Emusanda Health Centre to ensure that everyone tested through the CarePack® campaign has access to healthcare, including HIV/AIDS treatment.
2008 - The LifeStraw® Family water purifier is introduced for domestic use in developing countries. Vestergaard develops and manages a pilot project for a comprehensive prevention campaign called CarePack® in Kenya. It combines healthcare tools distributed as an incentive for mass HIV testing.
2012 - Introduced LifeStraw® Family 2.0 with built-in secure storage container and LifeStraw® Community high-performance water purifiers.
2011 - The LifeStraw® Carbon for Water campaign uses carbon finance to provide 4 million people in Kenya with sustainable access to safe drinking water.
2014 - LifeStraw launches the Give Back programme, which provides safe water for an entire school year for every LifeStraw® bottle purchased at retail.
2013 - LifeStraw® Go, a refillable water bottle that uses LifeStraw® technology, is introduced as LifeStraw's first product to target the outdoor market in developed countries.
2016 - VestergaardLifeStraw launches the independent, non-profit LifeStraw® Safe Water Fund to provide drinking water to disaster victims, school children in need of safe water and vulnerable communities around the world.
2015 - Starting this year and in all future years, 100% of all LifeStraw® ricochet filters donated to the Carter Center will be donated. To date, LifeStraw has provided more than 39 million ricochet filters to support disease eradication efforts.
