LOWA
In 2023, LOWA celebrated its 100th anniversary. Its official history began in 1923, when the son of a simple German shoemaker, Lorenz Wagner, opened his shoe shop in the Bavarian town of Etzendorf near Munich.
Lorenz Wagner's business began with a small, cramped shop and traditional Bavarian boots for the town. However, the surge in the popularity of mountain sports in the 1920s and the Alps just fifty kilometres from Etzendorf made a fateful change: the workshop began to produce mountaineering and ski shoes, and the history of LOWA is now and forever closely intertwined with the outdoors.
Lorenz has been working for months to perfect the pad - it was his work that laid the foundation for LOWA's famously comfortable shoes. The demand for Etzendorf shoes grows, and in the early 30s, Wagner builds the first full-fledged factory. At this time, Josef Lederer joined the team as an apprentice - temporarily, but he would return later and literally save the company.
In the 60s and 80s, LOWA is doing better than ever!
The company removes Bavarian boots from its product range and focuses entirely on the ski and mountaineering segment.
The brand begins active cooperation with leading climbers and provides them with equipment for expeditions. LOWA literally finds itself on the top of the world. Athletes popularise the brand and also provide invaluable feedback for further product improvement.
In the early 60s, comfortable LOWA boots for mountaineering and skiing became a hit, and the company expanded to almost a hundred employees.
The early 70s were marked by a breakthrough in terms of technology. In particular, LOWA AIR was introduced to the market - a ski shoe with an air cushion that allows the inner boot to be adjusted to the user's anatomy.
In the mid-70s, LOWA began to move confidently around the world, and sales began outside Germany: in Europe, the USA, and Japan.
1982. Another landmark date: the TREKKER LOWA model is released - the first trekking boot in the brand's range.
In 1997, the LOWA RENEGADE was released, a model of trekking boots that was destined to become a cult. Its production has not stopped to this day, more than 12 million pairs have been sold in 25 years, making LOWA RENEGADE one of the most popular trekking boots in the world!
In 2000, LOWA broke its first personal record with over 1 million pairs sold in a year. And in 2010, it sets a new one: 2 million pairs per year!
The area and production capacity of the LOWA plant in Etzendorf, where Lorenz Wagner himself worked, has been multiplied tenfold. Now it occupies 7,000 square metres, and as of 2019, it employs more than 2,000 people. At the same time, LOWA plants are being opened in Slovakia, Bosnia, Croatia and Italy.
In the 21st century, LOWA finally won the title of a manufacturer with a global reputation and continues to confirm this status.
From the moment of its foundation to the present day, the company has been categorical about quality and uses only the best for its products. The uppers are made mainly from genuine leather, combining it with ultra-strong and practical synthetics. Winter and demi-season models are complemented by windproof, moisture-proof and/or insulating lining made of Gore-Tex and/or Primaloft materials.
A unique footbed and a number of technological solutions have helped to make LOWA footwear extremely comfortable, durable and safe.
The products are thoroughly tested in the laboratory. Shoes are tested on 38 devices to ensure that the declared characteristics are true. Everything is checked down to the smallest detail. Special attention is paid even to the strength of the laces.
Since the 60s, the manufacturer has been actively cooperating with professional climbers and travellers. The brand's ambassadors personally test LOWA products, and their feedback, advice and suggestions form the basis for creating new models and upgrading old ones. In addition, the company's specialists monitor the feedback of ordinary users and take it into account in their work.
LOWA supports an environmentally friendly approach to production. The brand's high-quality products have a positive impact on environmental protection, as each pair of shoes lasts a long time and will not go to the trash after one or two seasons of wear.
