Merino Wool
Merino wool is considered one of the most expensive types of wool.
It is thinner than the wool of other sheep breeds - for the manufacture of yarn, merino wool is sheared only from the withers, it is in the withers that sheep have special fine fleece with a thickness of less than 23 microns.
It has a unique degree of softness and elasticity, as it is 3 times softer than natural silk and 5 times more elastic than cotton.
Soft, airy, warm, and of extraordinary beauty, it has no equal in the world of natural materials.
Merino wool is perhaps the only natural material that still cannot be reproduced using synthetic materials.
Properties of merino wool:
- High medicinal properties - wool softens and soothes acute pain, treats arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, helps with fractures, in the care of patients with bedsores, and also promotes rapid recovery from viral infections that occur in the autumn and winter.
- Antibacterial properties - creatine contained in merino wool is an unfavourable environment for the development of bacteria and microscopic insects, in addition, a water repellent is formed on the surface of each fibre, which repels insect pests.
- Hypoallergenic - merino wool is not an allergen and contains 8-10% lanolin, which, dissolving at a temperature of 35-37 °C, penetrates the skin and has a beneficial effect on joints, muscles, spine and respiratory system, as well as stimulates blood circulation.
- Excellent calming effect - products made of soft merino wool lull you to sleep better than any sleeping pill.
- Excellent thermal insulation - of all types of sheep's wool, merino wool has the finest hair, which is why merino wool is considered to be the warmest.
- Excellent moisture absorption - merino wool is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb up to 33% of its own weight in moisture, so any products made from merino wool always remain dry.
- Reliable protection against unpleasant odours.
- Unique self-cleaning effect; from time to time, merino products just need to be aired in wet weather.
- Electrostatic properties.
- Neutralisation of toxic substances.
RECOMMENDATIONS for the care of thermal underwear made of natural merino wool:
- Thanks to its antibacterial properties, thermal underwear does not need to be washed frequently!
- We do not recommend soaking before washing, as the threads may stretch and deform.
- You can wash it by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle, and sometimes it is enough to just rinse it with your hands.
- Occasionally wash with jeans or other coarse fabrics to remove unwanted spools.
- Wash clothes in bright, light or dark colours separately.
- Wash items with patterns inside out.
- If there are zips, wash with the zips closed.
- Products with flat seams should be washed separately from products with Velcro.
- The water temperature should not exceed 40 degrees!
- Do not use chlorine-containing or bleaching agents!
- Avoid products containing phosphates or enzymes!
- Do not use fabric softeners or rinse aid!
- It is not necessary to use special detergents for wool to wash thermal underwear, you can wash it with ordinary washing powders and liquid detergents, with other things of similar colour intensity.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all detergent residues.
- Do not spin in a centrifuge!
- It is not recommended to dry the thermal laundry in a tumble dryer or on a radiator!
- Before drying, gently squeeze out excess water, but do not twist the fabric.
- It is best to dry it flat on a horizontal surface in a ventilated area or simply hang it on a drying rack, chair back, etc.
- There is no need to iron wool thermal underwear, it is perfectly smoothed on its own.
- After each use and wash, dry the thermal underwear completely before storing it.
- It is best to store thermal underwear in a dry and clean place in special breathable bags.
MANUFACTURER
Icebreaker
New Zealand-based Icebreaker is a leader in the natural functional clothing market, specialising in thermal underwear made from Merino wool. In 1994, founder Jeremy Moon found a material that brought the properties of technological underwear one step closer to the ideal. It turned out to be merino wool, a special breed of sheep that has perfectly adapted to life in the highlands of the New Zealand Southern Alps. At the age of 24, he raised $200,000 from friends, his parents and their friends to start an outdoor clothing company.
Icebreaker has established a whole new trend in the technology clothing industry that breaks stereotypes. In the age of synthetics, they successfully found something that was ‘made in the mountains, not in a petrochemical laboratory’ and made a breakthrough in the production of thermal underwear.
Icebreaker thermal underwear is a premium product, and merino wool itself is one of the most expensive of its kind. Merino underwear fits the body nicely, it is soft, lightweight, and practical to use and care for. The goal of the Icebreaker brand is to resonate with every conscious inhabitant of the Earth. ‘Guided by the belief that nature has solutions, we offer an alternative to synthetics to create a healthy and sustainable future for our species and planet.’
Merino wool underwear has been in great demand around the world since 1995 and has received extremely positive feedback from users.
In 2018, the company was sold to VF (USA), the owner of Vans, The North Face and Timberland, for $288 million.
